Madness 03:18
Young men make a mess Mothers come and clean it up We all grow a little at a time Oh gentlemen don't be depressed There's life to live and girls to kiss We all grow a little at a time This truly is a mad season We’ve got so many reasons To love each other Just like brothers Cut you out, let you go, You've got no other place you know

Price to Pay 03:18
I was given an offer that I cannot refuse When you close your eyes, who is your muse? The first time that I saw you, broken and confused You had the look of an angel, silent and bemused Now we wonder separately, What we were when we were free You'll forget more than you learn, and no matter what they say When you cross that gate, there will be a price to pay So focus on the people that got you where you are And love like your savior, for (S)He is not far
3.
Oh baby, been thinkin' a lot about you lately Oh honey, I wanna hold you closely to me, to me I'd like to build a home in your heart and stay there for a while Everything about that sounds perfect to me, to me You know how it feels to feel everything at once Tell me exactly what you mean, you mean Like fire and a choir and a garden in bloom Like wrapping yourself in a blanket cocoon We will sing as one and dance into the sunset Over and over as the days go by watchin' them slowly as I look into your eyes There will be a day when come what may, baby Things get tough, we'll never always have enough but you are everything I need In my dreams we can fly up high Soar around the world not worry when we're gonna die We're always in a hurry let's just slow things down Soak life in right here right now
4.
A house is not a home when you're left all alone I've got too much fight, but not enough plight I'm runnin' all around , tryin' to hold my ground Comin' up for air, tryin' to prove I'm not scared A man should make his mark, not run from the dark I've got too much bark, and not enough bite Wastin' all my time, running through all the lines I don't know how, but one day I'll find I got soul I see how things go down, they give you the run around These unfortunate truths, fall to the ground Which'll drown us first, the debt or the pride? Apathy at its best, how long can we hide? I got soul And I know You've captured my mind But not my heart Don't call me unkind I'm just doing my part You have my head I've still got heart By my count That sets me apart YOU KNOWWWWWWWWW I GOT SOUL
5.
Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you Away, you rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you Away, I'm bound away 'Cross the wide Missouri Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter Away, you rollin' river Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter Away, I'm bound away 'Cross the wide Missouri Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you Away, you rollin' river Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you Away, I'm bound away 'Cross the wide Missouri Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, you rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, I'm bound away 'Cross the wide Missouri

When the birds sing do they think of the notes and the progressions? When a bell rings does it worry that its tone is too aggressive? If for one hundred heartbeats we could sing like the birds Boasting and laughing and proud of our words Oh the sound that could pour from my soul If only I could let it go When the waves crash in their chaos the disorder will not obey us When the wind blows does it notice the voices below it? If for one hundred miles that wind could carry our song Would our hearts go with it, singing along? There's a rhythm that runs through our veins Hidden away 'cause we're just too afraid To show anyone what we're made of That our courage will just end in shame

Oh little bird fly Oh little bird fly Oh little bird, fly away Across the big blue sky Oh little bird come down from your tree Won't you sit on my knee, won't you listen to me Someday soon you'll spread your wings Fly the whole world 'round and see everything But for now, you're my little bird Oh little bird sleep Oh little bird sleep Oh little bird sleep so sweet  And smile while you dream Your feathers are soft and your steps are small You've a tiny little chirp and you're not that tall But someday soon you'll be real big Growing fast and strong like a tulip in spring But for now you're my little bird Oh little bird listen to my song And when it feels right, won't you sing along But darling, don't just repeat after me You've gotta learn to sing for yourself, you see But for now, you're my little bird

It's been awhile since I last cried And it's been awhile since I've been alive I barely feel anything divine And I'm getting tired of trying But oh good God you keep me guessing And I guess it's time to count my blessings My tears roll at the drumroll In a slow neglected wave The air shakes and my body aches And I do not feel the same Sound shivers through my bones And I follow this salt trail home All this time I've been searching for Something more, oh something more Begging for something to fix my mind But it's been in my life for quite some time I feel you in every pitch, in every beat This is all the faith I need, Your music in me

about

Mad Season is a collection of studio, demo, and field recordings created between 2011 and 2013, during the first two years of The Honey Badgers' existence. For some reason we only sold it physically and never uploaded it to the internet. Your requests have been heard, and now it is here for your enjoyment. [2020-10-15]

credits

released July 31, 2013

All tracks were written by Erin Magnin & Michael Natrin, except 'Oh Shenandoah' (traditional American folk tune).

All songs were recorded and mixed by Michael Natrin in and around Newark, DE, except 'Price to Pay,' 'As One,' & 'Lullaby For Little Bird' - those three were recorded and mixed by Kevin Nemith at Digital Street Studios in Dover, DE as a part of the Delaware Friends of Folk 'Folk Hero' contest award package.

A newer version of 'As One' appears on 2019's 'Meet Me' full length.
Newer versions of 'Apathy At Its Best (I Got Soul)' & 'Hidden Away' also appear on 2013's 'Soul' EP.
